Research Integrity
Research Integrity (Academic Integrity) is about issues such as plagiarism, manipulated data, fabricated data and conflicts of interest, but also about matters of authorship on academic papers.
If something goes wrong in research practice, this may constitute 'scientific misconduct' or a violation of academic integrity. When this happens it is hard to determine what it is best to do or not to do.
Bureau Smitskamp advises on research integrity issues.
Clients
Clients are administrators, executives and managers at universities, (university) medical centers, colleges, research organizations, government institutions, and companies involved in scientific research.
Private individuals and individual scientists are also welcome.

Research Integrity Advisor
Research Integrity (Academic Integrity) is about issues such as plagiarism, manipulated data, fabricated data and conflicts of interest, but also about matters of authorship regarding academic papers.
Careful investigation into reports of possible violations of scientific integrity requires an eye for detail and nuance, insight into practices within the relevant field, and a clear distinction between main and secondary issues. In this way it contributes to a safe academic climate and to the self-learning capacity of the academic community.
The Dutch Code of Conduct for Research Integrity (2018) is leading.
Confidential Counselor Research Integrity
The external Research Integrity Confidential Counselor is helping those who turn to him or her for advice and for general or specific questions about academic integrity. Contacting the RI Confidential Counselor can help prevent issues from unnecessarily ending up before an investigative committee (CWI).
If an issue can best be investigated by a CWI, the RI Confidential Counselor can provide guidance in submitting a formal report about an alleged violation of academic integrity. This can help simplify a committee's investigation. If desired, the external RI Confidential Counselor can assist a reporter during the procedure.
Bureau Smitskamp endorses the Dutch Code of Conduct for Research Integrity (2018) and provides services as an independent Confidential Counselor for Academic Integrity. Smitskamp is fully certified as a confidential counselor for academic integrity and is affiliated with the Landelijke Vereniging voor Vertrouwenspersonen (LVV).

The boundary between desired behavior and misconduct in science is not always clear: there may be mistakes that can be corrected, there may be a gray area, and there may also be discrepancies between past and present standards. In some cases the boundaries of the code of conduct have been exceeded.
Sometimes you can investigate what is going on yourself and solve it together. In other cases, it is desirable to seek guidance due to the complexity of the issue, the sensitivity or the relationship of authority. In certain situations, submitting a formal report/complaint is the best course of action. It may also be advisable to seek adequate guidance and information about procedures.
Fieke Smitskamp
With over ten years of experience in the field of research integrity. Since 2013, I have gained more than ten years of experience in the examination of issues on research integrity, investigating matters at Vrije Universiteit and Amsterdam UMC (VUmc). The reports related to various fields within the humanities, sciences, social sciences and medical domains.
In addition, I have many years of experience with the substantive guidance of procedures at the National Body for Scientific Integrity (LOWI). In January 2023 I was appointed member of the CWI of Erasmus University in Rotterdam.
I live with my partner, son and daughter in Leiden. In my spare time I am an avid fan of theatre, literature and classical music.
